So, you checked your email analytics and… yikes.
Open rates are flatlining, click-throughs are basically non-existent, and conversions? Yeah, let’s not even go there. But don’t panic, things can change. I started using email marketing in 2014 and I know exactly what works… and more importantly, what doesn’t.
Now, if your emails are constantly flopping, chances are you’re making one (or more) of these super-common mistakes. In this blog post, I’m breaking it all down, to get your emails actually working for you.
1. Subject Lines That Don’t Get Attention
If your subject line doesn’t scream “Open me!” the rest of your email might as well not exist. First impressions count, and boring, bland subject lines won’t cut it. When I create emails for clients, the subject line pops. It grabs attention, sparks curiosity, and makes people want to click, without feeling like a cheap clickbait trap. Check out these examples:
⭐ E-commerce – “Your cart’s about to get a glow-up…don’t miss out!”
⭐ Nutrition – “Your pantry called…It’s starving for an upgrade.”
⭐ Real Estate – “This house is hotter than your coffee…Act fast!”
⭐ Coaching – “When was the last time you upgraded your mindset?”
See what I mean? You’ve got to people excited before they even open your email. That’s the goal.
2. Talking At Instead of To Your Audience
I’ve seen so many emails that feel like a corporate lecture. They’re formal and easy to ignore. Your ideal client or customer wants connection. When I write for clients, I make sure their emails sound conversational and relatable, making readers feel like they’re part of a personal conversation.
Every email feels like a personal chat. They are engaging, real, and something your readers actually want to open. Because when your emails feel human, they build trust, spark interest, and keep your audience coming back for more!
3. Your Call to Action is Basically MIA
If you’re not telling your audience exactly what to do, don’t be surprised when nothing happens. I make sure there’s zero confusion. Every email I write has a bold, can’t-miss CTA that pushes readers to take action. It could be clicking, signing up, or hitting “buy now.” Try lines like:
⭐ “Grab your spot now!”
⭐ “Claim your offer before it’s gone”
⭐ “Secure your free access today”
Your call-to-action seals the deal and drives the action. So, make it impossible to ignore and super clear on what you want them to do. Simple, direct, and loaded with energy!
4. Info Overload = Readers Hitting Delete
Flooding your emails with too much info is a big mistake. Your subscribers will zone out faster than you can say “unsubscribe.” Sure, if you’re a nonprofit sharing updates or stories, mixing in different elements can makes perfect sense. But for businesses? No way.
When you’re pushing a product or hyping an event, your message needs to stay focused. When I write emails, I keep it focused on one key message. It doesn’t matter if I’m pushing a product or hyping an event, I keep it streamlined.
5. Hitting Send Without Testing
Sending an email full of broken links or weird formatting? That’s a one-way ticket to unprofessional-ville. And guess what? There are no do-overs in email marketing. Once it’s in their inbox, the damage is done.
That’s why every email needs a solid test drive before it goes live. You’ve got to check formatting, make sure it looks perfect on mobile (because let’s face it, that’s where most people are reading), and, of course, make sure every link works flawlessly. If something’s off, it screams amateur, and you’re not about that life. Test it, tweak it, then hit send with confidence!
